SAMPLE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP ASSIGNMENT

Therapeutic Relationship

The therapeutic relationship is vital in caring for patients. A good therapeutic relationship with patients promotes high-quality care. Patients who relate with their healthcare professionals are more likely to comply with treatment instructions (Moreno‐Poyato et al., 2021). They will also be free to ask any questions regarding their care. As such, healthcare professionals should ensure a good relationship with their patients. In this assignment, I have discussed strategies to promote trust, my experience with moral distress, the link between morality and health promotion, and my strengths and weaknesses in communication skills. I selected case study 1 to answer the assignment questions.

Strategies that Promote Trust Between Patients and Health Care Providers

Healthcare professionals need patients to trust them for the patients to freely share with them their confidential information without worry (Drossman & Ruddy, 2020). Healthcare providers can promote trust with their patients through various strategies. One of the strategies is being honest. As with other human beings, patients love honest people. To gain patients’ trust, healthcare professionals must conduct themselves honestly and honestly (Moreno‐Poyato et al., 2021). Patients must always feel their healthcare professionals are working in their best interests and have faith in their abilities to provide suitable advice. Patients will likely stop respecting and believing in healthcare professionals if they perceive them as dishonest.

The second strategy is remaining confidential. Healthcare professionals must assure patients that their information will remain confidential for the patients to trust them (Drossman & Ruddy, 2020). The third strategy is showing the patients care and respect. Respect is a crucial component of a long-lasting working partnership. Drossman and Ruddy (2020) noted that protecting patients’ freedom to practice their values and beliefs and cultural diversity is important. Healthcare providers must put their patients’ needs first, not letting personal prejudices get in the way. Lastly, healthcare professionals can gain patients’ trust by actively listening to them and showing them sympathy when needed.

A Personal Experience Where I Faced Moral Distress

Moral distress occurs when an individual faces barriers or challenges when they want to take an ethically correct action. As a Nurse Practitioner, I have faced several situations that made me experience moral distress. One that I cannot forget is when I was caring for a patient with cancer. Two years ago, I was caring for a patient with stage four cancer. I was invested on the patient to ensure that she regain her health. However, she decided that she does not want to be treated. She told me that she was tired of endless treatments with no positive outcome. She just requested that she be provided pain medications as she waits for her final days. I was so heart broken but had to comply with her request. Even her husband was not happy with her decision. He together with her sister tried to convince her but she refused to yield. I provided her with pain medications. The patient eventually stopped her medications and died four days later. I will not forget the moral distress I experienced that day.

Relationship Between Health Promotion and Morality

Health promotion and morality are closely linked in various ways. One of the ways is to prevent harm. Health promotion activities such as those that aim to reduce the rate of smoking and drug abuse and prevent the high rate of suicide in society. Such health promotion activities promote ethical principles such as Nonmaleficence. The healthcare professional must prevent a patient from being harmed (Ventura et al., 2021). The preventive promotional activities are designed to prevent communities from being harmed by high rates of suicide or smoking.

The second way is reducing health disparities. Some health promotion programs are designed to reduce disparities by educating populations about health issues (Berwick, 2020). For instance, a health promotion program designed to educate patients on strategies to prevent obesity, heart disease, and diabetes reduces health disparity by improving the population’s health literacy. These promotional activities promote equality and equity in society, thus improving social morality. Overall, the goal of health promotion programs is to promote healthy lifestyles and preventive care and reduce health disparities, which are linked to society’s moral values.

My Insights About My Communication Strengths and Weaknesses and Development of Therapeutic Relationships

I have many communication strengths. One of the strengths is empathy. During communication, I avoid judging others and just listen. I also can listen actively and even take notes when necessary. Active listening has helped collect a lot of information from patients. Some patients love to talk without being interrupted. I am also good at building rapport with other people. I easily develop relationships with other people. My other skills include respecting other people’s cultures and emotions, providing feedback as fast as possible, and being confident when communicating.  However, my weakness is emotional intelligence. I find it hard to control my emotions when discussing emotional issues. My emotions often overcome me when discussing themes that are sensitive to me.

Developing a therapeutic relationship can be hard for me when I am working with a patient who does not understand English. Communicating with the patient might be hard and can prevent developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient. Terminating a therapeutic relationship can be hard for me, especially when I have invested my emotions and feelings in helping a patient recover. I often want the patient to gain healthy status before we terminate the relationship.

Conclusion

Trust between patients and healthcare professionals can be promoted through honesty, confidentiality, care and respect, and active listening. I experienced moral distress when a patient with stage four cancer stopped her treatment and died four days later. I want to invest greatly in the patient. Health promotion is associated with morality by preventing harm, improving access to care, reducing health disparities, and promoting equality and equity. Their communication strengths include building rapport, active listening, empathy, respect for other people’s cultures and emotions, providing feedback as fast as possible, and being confident when communicating. My weakness is emotional intelligence. Developing a therapeutic relationship can be hard when there is a language barrier, and terminating it is hard when I am emotionally invested.
