Competency Assessments MGTCB/526

Competency 1 Assessment Instructions

Congratulations! For your competency assessment, You’ve been hired as a manager at a large company. Your first task is to analyze the current state of the organization and propose a new business initiative. You will complete this task on a worksheet.

Competency assessment Step 1: Select an Organization

  • Review at least 3 global companies on the Business Source Complete: SWOT Analyses list. Note that some SWOT reports are more recent than others. Look for organizations with recent reports (within 2 years).
  • Select a company from the list and research its history. (Alternatively, you may use your current or past employer.) You will use your chosen company throughout this course. It will be referred to in the course as “your organization.”

Competency assessment step 2: Organizational Analysis

  • Review your organization’s SWOT analysis and other available sources. Your goal is to evaluate the strategic needs of the organization within a changing global environment.
  • Complete the Organizational Analysis worksheet for your evaluation.

Note: The type of information you’ll need to complete the worksheet is often found in the organization’s annual report.

Download and review the rubric. Use it as a guide when completing the assessment.

Submit your completed assessment using the Competency 1 Assessment submission area that will open after you complete the Competency 1 Reflection.

Competency 2 Assessment Instructions

You’re new on the job and already have an important assignment: to write a proposal for how to align the company’s operational needs with its business strategies. You hoped to start by looking at the company’s organizational chart (org chart)—but they don’t have one yet! You’ll have to create an org chart for your new company. Then, you’ll write your proposal.

Step 1: Organizational Chart

Create an org chart of your company. You can usually find this high-level information on the company’s website or on websites about the company. Your org chart should include key leadership and levels of responsibility. If the information is not public, base your org chart on a similar organization and/or research. Use any Microsoft® program or web-based program to create the chart.

Step 2: Proposal

Write a 1,000- to 1,200-word proposal for how to align the company’s operational needs with its business strategies. Complete the following in your proposal:

competency assessment
  • Explain the structure of your org chart (about 350 words).
    • Discuss the type of hierarchy and related details of each role.
    • Assess how each role in the org chart is related to the other areas within the organization.
  • Analyze the company based on Porter’s Five Forces.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of the company’s current leadership model.
    • Consider the leadership style or styles currently in place.
    • Determine the effectiveness of the leadership style/s and whether one or more alternative styles would be more impactful.
  • Provide a recommendation for the following actions:
    • Leadership model changes and how they would affect the current org chart
    • 2 or 3 actions needed to align operational needs with identified business strategies

Include the organizational chart with your proposal.

Download and review the rubric. Use it as a guide when completing the assessment.

Submit your completed assessment using the Competency 2 Assessment submission area that will open after you complete the Competency 2 Reflection.

Competency 3 Assessment Instructions

Your organization seeks a competitive advantage in their field, and they’re turning to you for answers. Specifically, they want your analysis and recommendations on ways to bring the company culture, demographics, and technologies up to current industry practices and beyond.

Step 1: Outline

Demographics

  • What are the current demographics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, etc.)?
  • What was a recent change in demographics or the organizational structure?
  • Did the company handle the change ethically? If not, how should they have handled it? If yes, what stands out as something to emulate going forward?

Technology

  • How does the company use technology in day-to-day business?
  • What types of technology are used?
  • How does a change of technology affect the organization?

Step 2: Presentation

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation. Do the following in your presentation:

  • Analyze the organization’s current culture (e.g., beliefs, expectations, values, and norms). Address how managers influence the organizational culture.
  • Evaluate the impact of demographic forces in your organization (e.g., age, ethnic origin, race, social class, gender, and sexual orientation). Consult your outline from Step 1.
  • Examine the impact of technological forces (e.g., changes in the technology managers use to design, produce, or distribute goods and services). Consider how this can contribute to innovation within the industry.
  • Examine how the organization has complied with ethics and social responsibility behavior.
  • Recommend ways to innovate based on your analysis.
  • Summarize your analysis and recommendations.
  • Cite references.

Download and review the rubric. Use it as a guide when completing the assessment.

Submit your completed assessment using the Competency 3 Assessment submission area that will open after you complete the Competency 3 Reflection.

Make sure to give credit to any sources you use by including both in-text citations and a list of references. You can see how to do this in the APA 7 manual or in the University Library
