Module Two – Preparing Cultural Interview Questions for “A Cultural Interview” Assignment

In preparation for your Module 3 cultural Interview assignment, choose a cultural group that is different from your own background and plan to interview someone from this culture. The goal is to explore a culture that you will likely encounter in your nurse practitioner role.
Using Module 1’s Mind Map, and the textbook’s FIG 1.1 and FIG 1.2 in Chapter 1, prepare a list of questions that will help you gain insights into the cultural aspects of healthcare for your selected interviewee. Ensure your questions are respectful and culturally sensitive.
Cultural Interview Questions Submission Instructions:

Complete and submit the assignment by 11:59 PM ET on Sunday.
Late work policies, expectations regarding proper citations, acceptable means of responding to peer feedback, and other expectations are at the discretion of the instructor.

Module Three – Cultural Interview Assignment
Contact an individual from the cultural group selected in module two (with their consent) and conduct a cultural interview.
This interview can be in person, over the phone, or through a video call.
The individual can be a patient, neighbor, grandparent, in-law, or friend. Do not use your parent, brother, sister, spouse, or significant other.
Respect the interviewee’s privacy and cultural beliefs.
Use the interview questions developed in Module 2 based on Module 1’s mind map and the textbook’s FIG. 1.1 and FIG. 1.2 in Chapter 1 as the blueprint and guide for your interview.
Take notes during the interview to capture the key points discussed.
Use voiceover PowerPoint, Canvas Studio Screen Capture, Teams, or Zoom to narrate the PowerPoint presentation you will create to share the results of the interview.
Be sure to answer the following questions in the presentation:
Did your preconceptions or stereotypes influence the interview process?
What cultural factors emerged during the interview that could impact healthcare decisions?
How might you adapt your nursing practice to provide culturally competent care for individuals from this cultural group based on the interview insights?
Cultural Interview PPT Submission Instructions:
The presentation is to be original work and logically organized, formatted, and cited in the current APA style, including citations and references.
The PowerPoint presentation should consist of 10-15 slides and be 10-15 minutes in length. Use voiceover PowerPoint, Canvas Studio Screen Capture, Teams, or Zoom to narrate the PowerPoint presentation.

Incorporate a minimum of 4 current (published within the last five years) scholarly journal articles or primary legal sources (statutes, court opinions) within your work. Journal articles should be referenced according to the current APA style (the online library has an abbreviated version of the APA Manual).

Interview Questions
As a healthcare professional, being culturally competent can help me provide patient-centered care. Understanding the culture of patients can help me provide dignified and respectful care to all patients. In this assignment, I will develop questions that I will use to understand the culture of an Asian American patient. I have developed the questions based on the mind map I designed in module one. The mind map is in appendix A.
Communication:
- Which language do like to be communicated to when a healthcare professional is explaining healthcare issues to you?
- Is there a particular way you would like me to address you or other family members during our interactions?
- How important is nonverbal communication (gestures, eye contact, etc.) in your culture?
Social Organization:
- Who are the key decision-makers regarding your health care within your family structure?
- Are there any cultural beliefs or practices related to gender roles that I should be aware of?
- How does your community view seeking medical care from healthcare professionals?
Time:
- Are there any cultural or religious events or holidays that might affect your availability for appointments or treatments?
- How do you perceive the concept of punctuality for healthcare appointments?
- Is there a preference for a specific pace or timing when discussing health-related matters?
Environmental Control:
- Are there any culturally significant items or practices you would like to incorporate into your care environment?
- Do you have any dietary restrictions or preferences based on cultural or religious beliefs?
- Are there any specific cultural practices or rituals you would like to observe during your care?
Biological Variations:
- Are there any cultural beliefs or practices related to specific health conditions or treatments that I should be aware of?
- Do you have any concerns or preferences regarding medication or treatment options based on your cultural background?
- Are there any traditional remedies or healing practices commonly used in your culture that you would like to discuss?
Space:
- What is your preferred level of personal space during physical examinations or procedures?
- Are there any cultural norms or beliefs regarding physical touch or modesty that I should be aware of?
