Evidence-Based Practice Proposal Project: Framework or Model for Change

Change is a common thread running through all organizations regardless of industry, size, or age. Healthcare institutions are among the organizations that change. An effective change model should be applied for my evidence-based practice (EBP) proposal project to be successfully implemented in the target healthcare facility. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss a change management framework that will be applied to guide the implementation of my EBP proposal project.

The Selected Framework

The selected framework is Lewin’s change management model. This change model was developed by Kurt Lewin in the 1940s and is still an effective framework in the modern era. The model has three stages, including Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze. This model will be vital to my project because it has been used to successfully implement various nursing projects. For instance, Abd El-Shafy et al. (2019) applied Lewin’s model to apply a collaborative care model to improve the quality of care in a trauma unit.

The authors noted that the implementation of Lewin’s 3-Step model led to a decrease in admission rates by 10%. The model also facilitated culture change during the implementation of the collaborative care model. Saleem et al. (2019) also found that Lewin’s change model effectively implements nursing interventions.

Stages of Lewin’s Change Management Level

The first stage of the change model is “unfreeze.” This stage involves preparing the healthcare facility ready for the change. In this stage, the initial behavior of the target population will be eliminated, and the new one developed (Hussain et al., 2018). A compelling message is developed in this stage to persuade the target population to embrace the change. The reasons why the change is needed should be explained in this stage. The second stage is “change.” After the change is introduced, the change is implemented.

The project manager should communicate with the people affected by the change to ensure that they understand why the intervention is needed (Hussain et al., 2018). Not every person will embrace the change; therefore, constant communication will help support the change. The last stage is “refreeze.” The organization should be ready to refreeze after embracing the new change (Hussain et al., 2018). The project manager should help institutionalize and internalize the change in this stage. The change manager should ensure that the change is practiced all the time.

Application of Each Stage

Each stage of Lewin’s change model will be vital in my project. I will apply the first stage by educating the target population on the need for the change. The patients have obesity. I will educate them by showing them the risk factors of obesity and how walking for 30 minutes a day will improve their overall health. I will also listen to the concerns of the target population and address them. I will create compelling messages that will influence the target population to embrace the proposed intervention. I will apply the second stage by providing resources and support to the target population as they walk for 30 minutes daily. I will dispel any rumors in this stage by communicating clearly.

Lastly, I will apply the third stage by ensuring leadership support, identifying barriers to change, providing change support, and reinforcing it by creating reward systems and establishing feedback systems. I will also celebrate the success of the change with the target population if they achieve the assigned goals. Information is key in this stage. I will also ensure that the target population and any other stakeholders are supported and informed.

Conclusion

The selected change management model that will be used in implementing the proposed intervention is Lewin’s change management model. This change model was developed by Kurt Lewin in the 1940s and is still an effective framework in the modern era. The model has three stages, including Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze. The “unfreeze” stage involves preparing the healthcare facility for the change. The change manager should empower and motivate people to embrace the new change. The third stage is “change.” This step is the implementation stage.

The change manager should communicate and promote the change. The last stage is “refreeze.” The change manager should create a healthy environment to implement the change efficiently.
